One of Utah’s own grassroots outdoor tech companies has been snatched up, as Mountain Hub was recently acquired by Switzerland-based Mammut. Located in Park City, Mountain Hub was built from the ground up and quickly became an exciting platform for online sharing in the outdoor community.
Mountain Hub is a crowd-sourced, community platform that incorporates all sorts of outdoor information available as a smartphone app. Previously known as Avatech, the program was specific to backcountry skiers who used it to share snowpack and avalanche danger information to fellow users. That evolved over time to Mountain Hub, which now incorporates all outdoor activity including trail running, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, climbing, and more. Features include adventure tracking, trip reports, and unlimited offline maps.
So what does the sale to Mammut mean for Mountain Hub? According to the founders, Brint Markle and Jim Christian, they expect Mammut has the vision and resources to take the program to new heights.
Here’s the full press release that went live on Wednesday after the official announcement at Outdoor Retailer in Denver.
Global outdoors leader Mammut today announced the acquisition of digital outdoors platform, Mountain Hub, for an undisclosed amount, in a push to bolster the brand’s digital community, connection to consumers, and integration of technologies across platforms.
Mountain Hub, based in Park City, UT and originally founded by MIT graduate students in 2015, was born out of the desire to enhance the outdoors experience by crowdsourcing real-time trip reports, routes, and conditions that make the outdoors safer and more accessible for everyone. Described as “Waze of the outdoors”, Mountain Hub’s capabilities perfectly align with premium Swiss brand Mammut’s focus on enhancing the consumer experience, building community, and providing valuable mapping, planning and information tools through a premium product.
CEO and Co-Founder of Mountain Hub, Brint Markle, says “Mountain Hub makes it easier for anyone to get outdoors, find the right information they need, and share experiences with a likeminded community. Together with Mammut, we are eager to continue working with our community and partners across the outdoor industry to build that best digital tools and resources that help everyone get outside often, safely, and responsibly.”
As an industry innovator since 1862, this acquisition for Mammut represents another cutting edge opportunity in which Mammut seeks to push the boundaries and continue to serve the outdoor industry from the frontline.
“This is about experiences,” said Joe Prebich, CEO for Mammut North America. “The acquisition of Mountain Hub brings a whole new way to partner with consumers and professionals to deliver a digital experience like no one else can. From trail data to community meetups, athlete profiles and trip logs to real-time reports that aid in your daily adventures,
Mountain Hub truly brings digital into the outdoors in a seamless and organic way.” Mammut sees the acquisition and utilization of the Mountain Hub technologies as a powerful opportunity to support a rapidly growing digital platform that connects authentically with a broad array of outdoor users, and in doing so, helps everyone get the most out of their outdoor pursuits.
