Do you want to teach your small children how to ski but don’t know how or even where to start? Well KSL 5 produced a great video web-series called, Learn to Ski with Max and Andy. Full disclosure: I work for KSL TV and shot the video. Blatant self-promotion aside, as a father currently teaching his 3-year-old how to ski, I’ve found the tips in these webisodes to be invaluable.
The series is hosted by Andy Phillips. He’s a former Utah Ute and NFL placekicker, as well as a former U.S. Ski Team member. Now he’s a father of four and has been using his skills as an elite, world-class skier to teach his own kids. You can discover his techniques and how to apply these lessons to teaching your own kids. Skills like balance, speed control, stopping, and most importantly, having fun. All six segments were shot at Solitude Mountain Resort, which is an ideal place for kids under 5 to learn how to ski.
Learn to Ski with Max and Andy is divided up into six episodes. Each is a step on the ladder of shred.
- Episode 1: Getting the Gear
- Episode 2: Skiing Inside
- Episode 3: First Day on Snow
- Episode 4: Fun and Games
- Episode 5: Hitting the Slopes
- Episode 6: Reinforcement and Next Level Steps
The first episode deals with buying or renting the correct-size gear for small kids. The next step is putting on the gear and having your kids shuffle around on the carpet indoors. Next is their first time of snow where you get your kids sliding around. Now they are ready for the magic carpet and a bit of a slope. After this, the kids are ready for riding a chairlift and skiing actual runs. Finally, Andy talks to the Solitude Ski and Ride School on best practices and getting kids to improve on what they learned.
