Global pandemic? Yea, it sucked. But what didn’t suck about 2020 is that we still got to go outdoors and test new outdoor products. From camping stoves to CBD oil, there was really no limit to what we would review. As long as the product could benefit outdoor adventures, it was worth checking out in my book. So here is our favorite 2020 outdoor gear of the year.
Outdoor Research Hemispheres Jacket
The Hemispheres Jacket is very unique for a hardshell. First, the GORE-TEX fabric stretches. Second, it breathes astonishingly well. It does all this and still provides bomber protection from anything mother nature can throw at it.
I think I’d be hard pressed to find a ski shell more packed with new technology then the Outdoor Research Hemispheres Jacket. If you’re looking to replace that old, faded shell of yours, give the Hemisphere’s line a look and I think you’ll agree with me. Read the full review.
Burton Genesis Snowboard Binding
Burton has employed single-component baseplate construction that is comprised of a 30% Short Glass/Nylon composite. The idea here is that the single-component build will provide a consistent response for all-mountain riding in any conditions. It also means they are strong AF. If you do happen to break the baseplates, Burton has a lifetime warranty. The cushioning is impressive; the AutoCANT Fullbed system is dual-density EVA foam that is supposed to ease your foot into a more natural and comfortable position to reduce fatigue and pain. The B3 Gel Cushioning in the baseplates is designed to withstand cold temps and repeated bashings.
With a $350 price tag and a tech sheet that will make your eyes go crossed, you’d be right to expect a lot from the Burton Genesis bindings. And you’ll get it. I’ve never ridden a binding that was more high-end, both in construction and performance. While I found them to be a bit too smooth, many riders will be pleased with this type of luxury. After all, my feet don’t hurt at the end of the day, and my old man knees are much happier than after riding my lower price-point bindings. If you’re looking for a medium flex binding that will rip the entire mountain, the Genesis might be the one for you. Read the full review.
RIGWA Bowl
Meals on the go. In my world this typically means chewing on an energy bar in the middle of a mountain bike ride. But why settle for processed protein bricks when you can have real, delicious food instead? One problem: how to carry your salad/pasta/vegan-gluten-free-organic-trendy grub. Enter the RIGWA bowl.
It works great to keep hot food hot and cold food cold. If you’re going on a picnic to the lake, or just want to keep your lettuce from withering before lunchtime at work, the RIGWA bowl is up to the task. In fact, I like mine so much it’s become my go-to, even around the house. Read the full review.
GO Kinesiology Knee Sleeve
Go Sleeves are compression sleeves that reduce inflammation and lactic acid build-up. They also accelerate muscle recovery. Like athletes using kinesiology tape to provide support and lessen pain, Go Sleeves mimic that application while also being easy to use. Now anyone can get the benefit of kinesiology tape without needing a doctor or physical therapist to apply it.
Simply put, the Go Sleeve is the best compression sleeve I’ve used so far. After two years of wearing sleeves and knee braces of every sort, I can confidently say that the Go Kinesiology Knee Sleeve is the only one that gives me the pain-free results I’ve been searching for. Read the full review.
43 Solutions CBD
43 Solutions CBD is a company based in Durango, Colorado. They make CBD tinctures and salves from hemp plants containing less than .3% THC (the legal delineation between hemp and marijuana. That means you can safely take CBD without feeling any psychoactive effects (getting high). As an outdoor enthusiast, my main concern is using CBD to enhance post-activity recovery, and to mitigate joint and muscle pain while recreating. So I’ve been testing out two products, the CBD Hemp Oil Tincture, and the Ultra Deep Tissue Salve.
I can’t say that CBD products from 43 Solutions are a miracle cure for all the ails me. But I am confident in saying that overall I feel better while using the CBD Hemp Oil Tincture. That feeling of well-being is hard to explain – it’s like I’m more present and centered during the day. A plus for sure. As for pain relief, the Ultra Deep Tissue CBD Salve definitely works to diminish muscle and joint pain. Read the full review.
Tifosi Optics Sledge Sunglasses
The Sledge shades are oversized in all the right ways. They allowed me to have full, unblocked peripheral vision. The field of view through these glasses is monstrous. And they pull off the oversize styling with minimal weight. The Sledge feel lighter on the face than my casual sunglasses. The Grimalid TR-90 frames are to thank for this.
I must say, if the robotron look is what you’re after, the Tifosi Sledge is it. They are great on the trail and have just the vibe I wanted. Once again Tifosi has managed to put together a great pair of glasses for a price well below their competition: you can own the Sledge for around $80. Read the full review.
