Gloves may not be the first thing a mountain biker is concerned with while gearing up… but they should be. A rider’s hands are a major contact point between body and bike, which means gloves with good grip, padding and overall comfort is essential. This summer I’ve been wearing the Truck ZRP mountain biking gloves and love them so far. In fact, I really wish I had a pair while researching rides for my guide book, Mountain Bike: Park City.
Truck Gloves ZRP
Truck Gloves sent me a sample pair of their new ZRP to test out and I jumped at the opportunity. They’re a local company based right here on Utah’s Wasatch Front. What makes them unique is they use a direct-to-consumer model, so you can only purchase their gloves online. With no retailer involved, the prices stay low. I was floored to see that the ZRP gloves cost a mere $28.
In addition to the low cost, Truck’s ZRP gloves feature:
- Goat skin leather palm
- Velcro closure
- Wrapped finger tips for ultra-comfort
- Conductive thread on thumb for touch screen compatibility
The Truck ZRP Test
This biking season, I’ve had the Truck ZRP gloves on several rides from Moab to the Uinta Mountains. From day one to now, I’ve been impressed at the quality of these gloves considering their affordable price. The goat skin leather is very soft and supple. From the palm to my fingers, the gloves fit my hands like… well… a glove. Truck uses a specific sizing system. So instead of small, medium, large, you can get a perfect fit by ordering size 6, 7, 8, 9 etc. A sizing chart of Truck’s website is easy to use to find your ideal size.
Previous gloves I’ve owned all had a Velcro closure, and each one has been a bit wimpy and unreliable. Over time, the straps would come loose during a ride. Truck’s Velcro strap is big and beefy. So far it has not failed me.
The index finger has seamless leather that wraps around the side. That means there are no pressure points on the fingertips when squeezing brake levers. The thumbs have a soft patch of fabric that I found useful as a nose wipe, or to sop sweat off my forehead.
Despite being full-fingered, leather gloves, the ZRP are remarkably cool. Even on hot rides in the desert when temperatures pushed 100 degrees, my hands never felt too sweaty. This breathability no doubt is fueled by the very lightweight material on the back of the hand.
The “P” in ZRP stands for “padded” (Truck also offers an unpadded glove called the ZR). The pads are strategically placed on the palms and heel of the hand for cushion against handlebars. I’ve found many mountain biking gloves overdo the padding, but the ZRP provides all I need for a comfortable ride.
Final Word
Truck ZRP gloves are my new favorite for mountain biking. With top shelf features and quality at a ridiculously low price, there’s no reason for me to wear anything else going forward. Plus it’s always best to support a local company who is creating jobs and contributing to Utah’s economy.
