In a bit of a “well obviously” and “it’s about time” moment, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a ceremonious bill which designates skiing and snowboarding as the official winter sports of the state. The signing of this bill is about the equivalent of signing a bill that says the sky is blue, because everybody already knows that Utah has the best skiing in the world, and an official designation doesn’t change that one iota. Now a real controversy would erupt if the Gov declared curling as the official winter sport of Utah. That would be fun to see.
Governor Herbert whipped out his pen and signed the “skiing is awesome bill” aka HB0201, at Ski Utah’s annual Media Appreciation Day, which happened at Solitude Mountain Resort. Each year at the event, Ski Utah presents two awards to media members who have significantly aided the promotion of Utah ski resorts. This year’s award went to Tim Hughes and Jeff Sory of KSL Outdoor Radio. According to Ski Utah, for the past four seasons, Tim and Jeff have made a concentrated effort to feature ski and snowboard resorts around the state and encourage Utahan’s to ski and snowboard through the Snow Day segment of their show.
In addition to the Journalism Award, Ski Utah also honors a Weather Enthusiast of the Year. Ski Utah says this award is given to the person who best celebrates Utah’s winter weather and encourages their audience to embrace The Greatest Snow on Earth®. Craig Gordon with the Utah Avalanche Center won this time around, and is was honored for his work with the Know Before You Go avalanche education program.
Now that skiing ans snowboarding are officially in the books as Utah’s official winter sports, what does that mean for summer? Can I put in suggestion for mountain biking? Anyone?
Motor biking is also be a good winter sport..
