Put down that Wii, get outside and experience real life!
And what better time to explore your inner nature side than during Great Outdoors Month!
Horseback riding, rafting down the Green and Colorado Rivers, swimming, running, boating on Lake Powell, rock climbing, fishing on the Provo River, golfing in the Heber Valley, backpacking and biking on the Slickrock Trail near Moab are just some of the things you can do. As if you really needed me to tell you.
Even just walking around the block counts – if that’s all you can do.
The exercise helps combat heart disease and childhood obesity which has tripled in the last three decades according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Families can celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week (June 5-13), the Great American Backyard Campout (June 26) and National Get Outdoors Day (June 12).
Former President Bill Clinton started Great Outdoors Week in 1997. It later expanded to the entire month of June by then-president George W. Bush in 2004.
This year, President Obama’s May 28th proclamation states, “America’s vast and varied outdoor spaces are a source of great national pride, and we have long strived to protect them for future generations. Our lands provide countless opportunities for exploration, recreation, and reflection, whether in solitude or with family and friends. During Great Outdoors Month, we renew our enduring commitment to protect our natural landscapes, to enjoy them and to promote active lifestyles for ourselves and our children.”
