Have you ever wanted an old chair lift as a swing or bench in the backyard? Well now is the time to plunk down the cash and get one, while supporting a worthy cause in the process. The Chairity Lift project aims to auction off 40 dismantled chairlifts that came from the historic Golden Eagle lift that The Canyons ski resort recently replaced with a new high-speed quad.
The Chairity Lift project united 20 artists with 20 corporations to benefit 20 charities in order to design 40 old chairlifts for the auction. Each chair is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art that will hopefully bring in much needed money to benefit charities.
Chairs were donated to two auctions, one on eBay, and a seperate live “Chairity Lift” event on December 17. The majority of the proceeds will go to the Kimball Art Center so they can continue to provide free exhibitions and year-round education programs. The rest (25%) will go back to the artists and charities of their choice.
One local example of this comes from employees at Backcountry.com, who designed a chair they call “The Back Seat.” The chair will be auctioned on eBay until Wednesday, Dec 15 at 8pm MST. Seventy-five percent of the funds from the auction will go to the Kimball Arts Center with Backcountry.com donating the remaining funds to the National Ability Center, http://www.discovernac.org
As a presenting sponsor, eBay announced it launched a 10 day online auction of these works of art. A select group of chairs were designated specifically for eBay and launched on December 6, 2010 at 8pm MST. The auction will be listed on the eBay Giving Works website, the official eBay giving site and corporate blog. The Chairity Lift auction can be found at: http://ebay.com/kimballartcenter.
The live Chairity Lift event will then take place on Friday, December 17th in the Grand Summit Ballroom at Canyons from 6:30 to 10pm. Hosted by Scott Wolf (star of ABC’s new hit series, “V”), the auction will also be an evening of entertainment with music from Bryon Friedman and a live auction of Golden Eagle lift chairs while Wolf emcees the event. Tickets are available for $50, until the week of December 13th-17th when ticket prices increase to $75.
