The highlight of the Outdoor Retailer Winter Show was the Terra Plana booth where I met running coach, Lee Saxby. Saxby is considered to be one of the best in his field, and a leader of applied science in barefoot running. Chris McDouggall, bestelling author of, “Born to Run”, calls Saxby “the worlds best running coach.” And I have to admit in the 15 minutes I spent working on my form with him, he changed the way I run for the better.
At the booth first thing, I put on a pair Evo’s that use the VIVOBAREFOOT technology. Saxby had me run on the treadmill, videotaping me from the side, and then played back the tape. With the Evo’s I could feel every foot strike and was more aware of my pace. Let me cut to the end and say that I’m working on quickening my pace, and shortening my stride, which has changed my form and is helping me run better.
Also on display at the booth was the ultra-lightweight barefoot running shoe, the Ultra. It’s meant for light trail cross running, water sports, or general barefoot exploration. And like all VIVOBAREFOOT products, it comes with an eco-matrix rating to show the environmental components.
With the minimalist in mind, Terra Plana is also introducing a barefoot multi-terrain running sandal. It has a removable and adjustable neoprene heel support foot strap to provide comfort during long runs. It has a split toe guard designed for downhill running control and protection. Or it could be worn as a open, breathable recovery shoe for after those long runs.
Terra Plana hopes momentum continues to build and change the way people see shoes. They distribute to stores internationally and can be found at www.terraplana.com.
