What’s worse, being stinky or not being seen? Both, if you were to ask the scientists at Agion Active and 3M. At Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2011 these two companies caught my eye because having taken up running in the past few years, certain clothing characteristics have become important to me.
Agion Active is a technology from Sciessent, and their motto is “Stink at Nothing.” The basis of Agion technology is silver. Apparently you can wear it, not like jewelry, but in clothing. It is the newest form of antimicrobial agent. Agion has a “smart” release, which means when you start to sweat your clothes absorb the smell and neutralize the odor. To name a few, large retailers like adidas, Columbia, and Woolrich, are releasing shoes, socks, and apparel with Agion technology. In fact Agion is holding a contest to see who can do the stinkiest thing in one of their shirts and submit their story to their website. The winner with the most votes will win a shopping spree on Amazon.com. I can’t wait to put my shirt to the test.

At 3M, their scientists were out at the booth to show and tell how most reflective running gear is important both day and night. With their 360 degree Enhanced Visibility program utilizing 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material, they demonstrated how runners could be seen from every angle – front, back and sideways. Scotchlite material is being integrated into sneakers, jackets, and other outerwear. But unlike some running vests, this new technology is more subtle and fashionable. This new material is being used by brands such as New Balance, Mizuno, and Harley Davidson to allow people to be noticed at nighttime or in low light conditions. There is no need to look dorky when you’re being safe.
