Headlamp technology has changed a ton since I first started using them. They’ve become smaller, and with LED technology, brighter. They’re also much lighter and more comfortable. Frankly I couldn’t imagine how headlamps could get any better. That is until I wore the new BioLite Headlamp.
BioLite Headlamp
The BioLite Headlamp is wildly different in that the lamp itself is so small that it feels like you’re wearing a headband. It’s small, it weighs nothing, and it is super bright – all in a compact package.
- The BioLite Headlamp features:
- 330 Lumens
- Rechargable
- Ultra Thin Profile with Flush Front
- Weighs 69 Grams
- Moisture-Wicking Fabric
- Four settings including spot, flood, red, and strobe
- Splash Proof
- Lock Mode
- Brightness Memory
First Look
I’ve only had a chance to use the BioLite Headlamp a few times, but so far my “first look” has left me very impressed. The design is super clever (not surprised based on other BioLite products). The thin, flush front is very comfortable against my forehead and there’s no bounce. I can’t think of anything more annoying than running at night and having a bulky headmap bumping up and down or even slipping off. With BioLite’s design, that issue is moot.
The lamp is balanced by putting the battery pack on the back of the headband. The wiring and electronics are integrated into the band so they don’t get in the way. The effect is a nearly weightless feeling. And after wearing it for a while, I really did forget I had it on.
But how does it perform? Well, I still see spots after taking photos of the lamp in all its 330 lumens of glory. Choosing what mode you want is an exercise in simplicity. There is only one button to push. Each press changes the mode for a versatile slate of options. Need to illuminate your path is the woods for a midnight potty break? Go with the spot. Reading a book in the tent? Try the flood. Don’t want to disturb your tent mate? Go with red. Need a night rescue? Strobe does the job. Or if you want to send holy white fire into the night you can run both the spot and flood simultaneously (just don’t point it at anyone’s eyes.)
At full steam, the BioLite Headlamp burns for 3.5 hours. But it can last 40 hours on low. And like many modern headlamps, it’s USB rechargable with a lithium-ion battery.
Plus, it’s very affordable at a price-point of $49.
Kickstarter Campaign
To bring the BioLite Headlamp to market, they’ve gone with a Kickstarter campaign. BioLite has seen a lot of success in the past using Kickstarter and this time is no different as they exceeded their fundraising goal in just the first day. Check it out and order your own BioLite Headlamp to get it in time for the holidays.
Final Word
So if you’re not in the market for a new headlamp, then you’re wrong. The BioLite Headlamp is so different, comfortable and bright that it’s the headlamp you didn’t know you needed. From night runs, urban cycling, camping and more, this headlamp is a great choice for any outdoors pursuit.
